Maintenance Manager candidate in Montgomery, Alabama.
Responsibilities
Provide leadership to the Maintenance Department in support of the plant production and machine uptime requirements. Effectively manage the Maintenance Supervisors and technicians in conjunction with normal day-to-day activities, preventative/predictive equipment requirements, and long term maintenance improvement projects. Provide technical expertise for equipment repairs and capital project installations. Develop technicians technically and professionally so as to provide the highest level of repair efficiency. Provide additional management support as needed relative to plant objectives. Seek out and develop processes to lower the plant cost associated with equipment maintenance and repairs. Support the plant safety focus with personal commitment and technical support.
- Manage and supervise the repair and maintenance of buildings and mechanical equipment; ensure timely installation and upkeep of the company’s property and systems.
- Perform duties in a safe manner; act as a role model for safety on shift; participate in the safety programs by reporting and addressing unsafe conditions, unsafe acts, and close calls and entering near misses and observations into Global Data Center (GDC).
- Oversee required training on selected safety topics as identified by the Safety Manager.
- Develop BMP for maintenance operations in support of exceeding world class machine availability standards (95% equipment availability).
- Supervise technicians relative to equipment repairs, preventative maintenance, and predictive maintenance.
- Manage the maintenance repairs budget to keep costing at an equivalent or improved per pound basis year end.
- Develop cost savings initiatives relative to equipment repairs, labor reduction, and maintenance activities.
- Assist production in maximizing output and reducing scrap.
- Write and submit requests for capital authorizations to highlight financial advantages of design changes.
- Provide a single point of contact for operational needs relative to equipment and building maintenance.
- Manage capital and expense projects in such a manner as to achieve the targeted objectives consistent with equipment performance, schedule and monetary constraints.
- Provide technical support to Engineering and Operations departments relative to capital projects, equipment operation, and maintenance functions.
- Optimize the utilization of the maintenance management system for maximum department productivity and efficiency.
- Review and utilizes existing plant accounting reporting to ensure cost control in maintenance department.
- Make capital recommendations for budgeting purposes.
- Identify and implement cost savings. Monitors and reports progress.
- Partner with the company engineering department for major projects involving the installation, maintenance, enhancement, and removal of machinery and equipment.
- Provide input into facility’s quality improvement and safety programs.
- Represent the company’s position and interest in dealing with outside contractors, vendors and engineering consultants.
- Manage technician activities and audit the processes to ensure maintenance work is completed in a safe manner.
- Organize and lead employee driven teams to address scrap, quality, safety or other production related issues.
- Review annual performance assessments, identify training needs to develop maintenance employees; provide ongoing coaching/counseling to Maintenance Leads for employee performance.
- Make recommendations on hiring and terminations; reviews and makes recommendations on hourly employee performance issues to ensure fairness and consistency.
- Conduct daily reviews with maintenance staff to optimize production.
- Willing to work flexible schedule to accommodate production and shift needs.
- Supervise technicians in the Maintenance Department either directly or through subordinate Supervisors.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities for the maintenance department talent selection process which includes job interviews and training.
- Perform other related functions and duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Engineering, Industrial Management, or other technical related field is preferred OR equilavent combination of education and experience; high school diploma or GED required
- A minimum of five years of industrial experience (preferably in the plastics industry) and a minimum of five years of experience managing a Maintenance Department.
- Computer literate with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office including word processing and spreadsheet applications; ability to learn and operate JDE, Kronos, and other business management software.
- Basic computer skills plus a working knowledge of computer software applications for word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills including the ability to prepare presentations.
- Must be able to work independently on multiple tasks while dealing with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
- Ability to adhere to Berry’s Safety, Health, and Environmental Vision, Policy, and Standards.
- Primarily a day shift office position with a flexible work schedule.
- Ability to stand, sit, kneel, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and crawl for extended periods multiple times per day.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds unassisted.
- Ability to work in warm, humid, and cool climates.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) which includes safety glasses, safety goggles, hearing protection, steel toe shoes/boots, face shield, gloves, and face mask.

- Ability to organize and prioritize work activities and to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to make practical decisions without appreciable direction or advance preparation.

- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to travel.
