Summary
The Sewer/Sample Maker brings design concepts to life with a strong understanding of garment construction and a highly skilled and detail-oriented approach. This role is responsible for creating high-quality prototypes and samples that accurately reflect design specifications and meet production standards and requires excellent technical sewing skills, pattern interpretation abilities, and a keen eye for detail to ensure the flawless execution of each garment.
Primary Responsibilities:
Function
- Garment Construction: Expertly sew and assemble sample garments from provided patterns, sketches, and technical specifications.
- Pattern Interpretation: Accurately interpret and understand patterns, including grading, markings, and construction details.
- Sample Cutting: Cut samples when needed.
- Technical Expertise: Utilize a variety of industrial sewing machines and equipment, including single needle, overlock, coverstitch, etc.
- Problem Solving: Identify and troubleshoot construction issues, offering solutions to ensure the integrity and quality of the garment.
- Quality Control: Maintain high standards of workmanship, ensuring that all samples are constructed accurately, neatly, and to the specified quality.
- Communication: Collaborate effectively with designers, pattern makers, and product developers to clarify instructions, provide feedback on construction, and suggest improvements.
- Material Handling: Handle and manipulate various fabrics and trims with care and precision.
- Time Management: Manage workload efficiently to meet deadlines for sample completion.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of construction processes and any deviations from the original specifications.
- Maintain Workspace: Keep the work area clean, organized, and safe.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on new garment construction techniques and industry best practices.

Required Education and Skills:
- Proven experience as a Sample Maker or Garment Constructor in the apparel industry.
- Exceptional proficiency in a wide range of garment construction techniques.
- Knowledge of garment fitting principles.
- Strong ability to read, interpret, and execute garment patterns and technical drawings.
- Extensive knowledge of different fabric types, their properties, and appropriate sewing techniques.
- Excellent skills in operating and maintaining industrial sewing machines and related equipment.
- Experience with ready-to-wear & activewear; knits and wovens.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to find creative solutions to construction challenges.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Experienced, But Not Required:
- Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred
- Working knowledge of Apple technology.
- Familiarity with Google products (Drive, Gmail and Docs).
Physical Requirements:
Manual Dexterity and Hand Coordination
- Frequent use of hands and fingers for sewing, pinning, cutting, and handling small tools and fabrics.
- Operation of sewing equipment requiring fine motor control and repetitive hand and wrist movements.
Visual Acuity
- Sufficient vision to inspect stitch quality, follow pattern specifications, and distinguish fabric colors and textures.
Posture and Mobility
- Ability to remain seated at a sewing station for extended periods (up to 8 hours).
- Occasional standing, reaching, bending, and moving about the work area as needed.
- Occasional lifting and carrying of materials up to 25 pounds.
Environmental Tolerance
- Work is performed in a sewing studio environment with moderate noise from machinery.
- Exposure to ironing equipment, fabric particles, and temperature variations typical of production settings.

- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
