Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice.
- Collaborating with physicists and optical, electrical, mechanical, software, and systems engineers to generate opto-mechanical sub-system requirements from top level requirements
- Leading the design, assembly, and test cycle for opto-mechanical products from the component level up through large sub-systems containing of hundreds of precisely aligned optical elements
- Designing systems for rugged environments including high shock, vibration, and temperature extremes while maintaining precise optical alignments to ensure performance.
- Formulating strategies to converge on an optimum design that meets demanding and often conflicting requirements while minimizing costly iteration cycles and design time.
- Analyzing design performance through structural and thermal finite element analysis (FEA) and optical ray tracing simulations
- Actively contributing to design reviews for optical and mechanical systems across the company’s product lines.
- Developing manufacturing processes for the assembly and alignment of the products you create.
- Characterizing opto-mechanical components and systems for performance, reliability, and stability by formulating and executing structured test plans
- Mentoring junior opto-mechanical team members and helping the team to standardize designs and implement processes
- Collaborating with the team to prototype features to seed and de-risk future detailed opto-mechanical designs
- Solving complex problems and make sound design recommendations
- Providing technical assistance for troubleshooting and diagnosing design quality problems
- Other duties or projects as assigned
